Globally, optimism about AI is on the rise, especially in places like Great Britain, Germany, and France. Apparently, these countries decided that AI might not be the robot overlord they feared after all. Or maybe they just watched one too many episodes of "Black Mirror" and realized it could be worse. In just one year, optimism in these countries jumped by 8 to 10 percentage points. It seems like AI is the new black—or at least the new less-terrifying gray.

In the workplace, 60% of people globally think AI will change how we do our jobs in the next five years. Only 36% are worried about losing their jobs to AI. So, people are basically saying, "Yes, change my job, but please do not replace me with a robot." It is like wanting a new phone model but hoping it does not come with a new set of bugs.

Now, let us talk about what people think AI will actually do for us. More than half believe AI will save us time, and 51% think it will give us better entertainment. And who does not want more time to binge-watch shows that AI might have suggested in the first place? But when it comes to improving health or boosting the national economy, people are a bit skeptical. Just 38% think AI will make us healthier, and only 36% believe it will boost the economy. So, AI might not be the fairy godmother we were hoping for—perhaps more of a fairy intern.

Technically speaking, AI models are getting bigger and more demanding, kind of like a teenager's appetite. The compute needed for these models is doubling every five months, but the cost of using them is dropping faster than my enthusiasm for New Year’s resolutions. For example, the cost of running a model at the level of GPT-3.5 went from $20.00 per million tokens in November 2022 to just $0.07 by October 2024. That is a 280-fold decrease! If only my grocery bills could drop like that.

And get this: AI patents are multiplying like rabbits. From 3,833 in 2010 to a whopping 122,511 in 2023. China is leading the charge with 69.7% of all these patents. They are cornering the market on AI ideas, proving that if you cannot beat them, you might as well patent them.

AI hardware is also getting faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient. Performance is doubling every 1.9 years, and energy efficiency is improving by 40% annually. If only we could say the same about our smartphones.
